Handbuilding Ceramics in Boulder

Handbuilding pottery classes in Boulder. Learn pinch, coil, and slab techniques for sculptural and functional ceramics.

Home / Handbuilding Ceramics

Handbuilding is the oldest form of pottery — creating ceramic forms using only your hands and simple tools, without a pottery wheel. It's an incredibly versatile and meditative way to work with clay.

At Boulder Pottery Studio, our handbuilding classes cover three foundational techniques: pinch pots (shaping clay by pressing with your thumbs and fingers), coil building (rolling ropes of clay and stacking them to build walls), and slab construction (rolling flat sheets of clay and assembling them into forms).

Handbuilding is perfect for beginners because there's no wheel to learn. It's also a favorite of experienced ceramic artists who love the freedom to create organic, asymmetrical, and sculptural forms. From mugs and bowls to planters and wall art, the possibilities are endless.
