Learn pottery trimming techniques in Boulder. Shape footrings, refine profiles, and finish your wheel-thrown work.
Trimming is the process of carving away excess clay from the bottom and sides of a leather-hard pot. It's how you create footrings, refine the profile of your work, and achieve the right weight and balance. At Boulder Pottery Studio, trimming is a core skill we teach in all wheel throwing classes.
Good trimming transforms a heavy, clunky pot into something refined and intentional. You'll learn to center your pot upside down on the wheel, use trimming tools to carve clean footrings, and assess wall thickness by tapping and feeling the clay.
At Boulder Pottery Studio, we teach pottery trimming as part of our comprehensive pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.
All materials are included in our class fees — clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is equipped with both gas and electric kilns, giving you access to firing options that most pottery studios in Boulder can't offer.
