Learn coil building pottery in Boulder. Create beautiful ceramic forms by stacking and shaping coils of clay.
Coil building is one of the oldest pottery techniques in human history. By rolling ropes of clay and carefully stacking them, you can build everything from small cups to massive vessels. At Boulder Pottery Studio, our coil building workshops teach you how to roll consistent coils, join them securely, and smooth or texture the surface to create your desired finish.
Coil building gives you complete control over the shape and size of your work. Unlike wheel throwing, there are no limits on form — you can create round, square, oval, or completely abstract shapes. It's a technique used by ceramic artists worldwide to create both functional pottery and sculptural art.
At Boulder Pottery Studio, we teach coil building as part of our comprehensive pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.
All materials are included in our class fees — clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is equipped with both gas and electric kilns, giving you access to firing options that most pottery studios in Boulder can't offer.
