Opening Spring 2027

Sgraffito in Boulder

Learn sgraffito pottery technique in Boulder. Carve through colored slip to reveal patterns and designs.

Home / Sgraffito

Sgraffito is a decorative pottery technique where you apply a layer of colored slip or underglaze to your clay surface, then carve through it to reveal the clay body beneath. The contrast between the colored surface and the exposed clay creates striking graphic patterns.

At Boulder Pottery Studio, we teach sgraffito as part of our surface decoration workshops. You'll learn to apply even coats of slip, plan your design, and use various carving tools to create lines, textures, and detailed imagery on your pottery.

Sgraffito Classes at Boulder Pottery Studio

At Boulder Pottery Studio, we will teach sgraffito as part of our pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.

All materials will be included in our class fees: clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is planned around modern computer-controlled electric kilns, so firings are consistent and dependable.
