Salt Firing in Boulder
Salt-fired pottery in Boulder. Learn about this atmospheric firing technique that creates orange-peel texture.
Salt firing is an atmospheric kiln technique where salt (sodium chloride) is introduced into the kiln at peak temperature. The sodium vaporizes and bonds with the silica in the clay, creating a distinctive orange-peel texture and glassy surface directly on the clay body.
Salt firing requires a dedicated fuel kiln, and our studio fires modern electric kilns — but we cover salt firing and other atmospheric techniques in our kiln firing workshops, so you can understand the full landscape of ceramic firing and recognize these surfaces when you see them.
Salt Firing Classes at Boulder Pottery Studio
At Boulder Pottery Studio, we will teach salt firing as part of our pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.
All materials will be included in our class fees: clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is planned around modern computer-controlled electric kilns, so firings are consistent and dependable.
