Learn pottery burnishing in Boulder. Polish clay to a smooth, lustrous finish without glaze.
Burnishing is the ancient practice of polishing leather-hard clay with a smooth stone, spoon, or other tool until the surface becomes glassy and reflective. It compresses the clay particles, creating a natural luster without any glaze.
At Boulder Pottery Studio, we teach burnishing techniques for creating beautiful, tactile surfaces. Burnished pottery has a warmth and softness that glazed pottery can't replicate — it's clay at its most elemental.
At Boulder Pottery Studio, we will teach burnishing pottery as part of our pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.
All materials will be included in our class fees: clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is planned around both gas and electric kilns, so you can choose the firing that suits the work.
